Mr. O’Grady, An Irish resident of Whitefield, had seen and was highly impressed by the service of the Sisters in St. Joseph’s Convent. He was sad and lonely after the passing away of his beloved wife, Dr. Mrs. Mary O’Grady. He respected in particular Srs. Juliana Lobo and Justina D’Souza. It was his dying wife’s wish that their house be used as a health centre. So in 1968, in complete confidence he made an earnest request to the Sisters through the Parishoners, asking them to take care of him and his house and convert it into a health centre.

So in 1968, Sr. Justina and Sr. Juliana from ST. Joseph’s Convent, Whitefield, became the instruments to extend the services from the already existing community to a field other than education. This even marks the dawn of a new era in the ministry of serving eh poor through the healing ministry.

15th September 1968 was the happy day when this new mission was born, the first of our medical institutions.

With the able leadership of Sr. Cecilia Thomas, the Project Directress, the Social Work Centre has developmental programmes like tailoring, self – help groups, creche, non – formal education for dropouts, computer education and spoken English courses for poor students. Empowerment of women and related services are part of their programme.
