Robertsonpet

In the year 1933, Fr. Jauffrineau, the Parish Priest of St. Mary’s Church, Champion Reefs, requested our Sisters to open a school at Robertsonpet, 3 km away from Champion Reefs. Srs. Mary Justina and Mary Josephine to start a school. They started one with 8 children with Tamil as the Medium of instruction. They walked to and fro daily. The school building was just a thatched enclosure. The town had not developed in those days. Houses were far a part. The population was scanty and the Catholic community was microscopic. In this situation the Sisters went on for eight years and under the strain one of them fell ill.

Fr. Stan Aranjo, the Parish Priest and kind – hearted person was a pioneer in education. He built a house for the Sisters at Robertsonpet with his personal money. Hence from the year 1941 the Sisters formed a community there with Srs. Maria Joanna ( Superior ), Mary Josephine, Mary Justina and Mary Agatha.

In 1944 Sr. Joanna had a brainwave to start an English Medium school. So it was decided to start one. As there was no room available, it was accommodated in the verandah of the Convent. Sr. Dorothy and Mrs. Johnson were appointed teachers. It had the strength of just 18. Though the strength increased, a thatched room was all they had Sr. Immaculate Conception was appointed its first headmistress.

The Sisters continued to render their services with zeal and dedication to this day. In the year 2005 the Sisters’ mission extended to three thousand seven hundred children. The High School Children are given opportunities for social exposure, prison ministry, visits to hospitals, home for the aged and service to other needy people. The community continues to serve the Parish community through Catechism, liturgy, taking Communion to the aged and the sick and family apostolate.
