Mother Anne, the visionary and Sr. Yvonne Marie, the inspiration and genius TO OPEN Jyothi Nivas College on 1st June 1966. Theirs was a clear conception of ‘ a new order ’. The College first began in the St. Joseph’s Convent premises at Fraser Town, in an annex of St. Francis Xavier’s High School, Fraser Town, with 22 girls in the I PUC. Sr. Yvonne Marie D’Silva was the first Principal.

The College was affiliated to the University of Bangalore on 6th July 1966, registered with the name of ‘ St. Joseph’s College for Women’, with 72 pupils in the PUC. Later Sr. Yvonne Marie renamed it Jyothi Nivas College. Mrs. Grace Tucker was the Principal for a short time till Sr. Marguerite de Jesus took over. Srs. Margaret Mary Pereira and Francesca K. were appointed lecturers. Sr. Rosarita Lobo, who studied, worked and retired in Jyothi Nivas College, belonged to the first batch of students.

On the evening of 2nd July 1976 in the pouring rain, with no electricity, the Sisters were escorted by our driver Mr. Francis, in our old green car no. 5888. Sr. Marguerite de Jesus ( Animator and Principal ), Srs. Eunice Halge ( Popularly known as Mother Mary ), Srs. Francesca K. and Jovita Noronha ( Lecturers ), Marie Pais ( Office Staff ) and Rosarita Lobo ( Librarian, with Philomena Cardoza and Maria Theresa ( Students ) formed the community. As there was no house for the Sisters, they shared the accommodation with the hostelites. Dedicated to the core, the Sisters even to this day, have maintained the spirit of simplicity of life and an atmosphere of welcome to all who enter there.
