St. Joseph’s Convent

Chikballapur was a Taluk of Kolar District in earlier days. The Catholics along with their Parish Priest, Fr. J. B. Fernandes ( of happy memory ), approached Mother Anne, Our Regional Superior, with a request to open a school for the children of Chikballapur.

Mother Anne, noted for her generosity and docility to the call of God for the missions, accepted this offer. With the consent of the Superior General, she went ahead with the arrangements. Srs. Mary Justina, Mary Clotilda and Pushpa Maria were chosen as the pioneers. Sr. Maurice accompanied the pioneers and they arrived at Chikballapur on 16th May 1960.

To start with, the Sisters opened a Kannada Primary School with a Nursery class, Stds. 1 and 2 with 175 children. Sr. Pushpa Maria was the Headmistress and Sr. Mary Clotilda was teaching in the School.

The in 1963 a plot of land was purchased close by, on Sidlagatta Road. The building was completed by 1966. The School was shifted to the new premises. The strength shot up to a thousand.

The community is now flourishing because of the hard work and perseverance of all our pioneering Sisters, inspiring other to greater dedication and fidelity !
